Yacht refit
Refit products and systems
These notes cover the products and systems already named on the case studies, plus the reason a specification guide gives for choosing a coating where that reason is written down. Application steps are included only when the card writes them down. A system is chosen against the coating already on the yacht and whether a new system is compatible with it, whether a repair can be done on board, what the specification or the warranty requires, the colour and the finish, and heat and humidity in Southeast Asia.
The refit team has also worked with International and Jotun.
A superyacht refit in Singapore names an Awlgrip finish. On the yacht refit programmes in Thailand the named coatings are Awlcraft 3000, Awlgrip and Alexseal, with Awlgrip 545 primer on one hull, a Hempel system on one newbuild, and Sikaflex and Burmese riftsawn teak on one Princess programme in Phuket. The newbuilds in Haiphong name Alexseal. A Hempel subcontract in South Korea, and a heritage racing craft in the United Kingdom, also name Hempel. How Awlgrip and Alexseal compare is set out by Superyacht Painters.
Awlcraft 3000

Awlcraft 3000 is the published coating on three programmes at Ocean Marina, Thailand. On the 40.2 m Benetti and the 41 m motor yacht the card names Awlcraft 3000. On the Sunseeker Manhattan 73 it is the topcoats, in Super Jet Black with red style lines, over Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer. It is an acrylic urethane that can be buffed, polished and repaired, and it dries quickly. It is applied by spray. That suits metallic blending and a full repaint.
On the 40.2 m Benetti, the specification is a full exterior refinish and repairs, run as one programme over 12 weeks in 2022–23. Quality inspections sit at each stage, and sign-off is against the written scope. Delivered in 2022–23. The completed scope is the full exterior refinish and repairs in Awlcraft 3000.
On the 41 m motor yacht, planning starts from a survey. The written scope is repairs, not a full refinish, and Awlcraft 3000 is specified for those repairs, with a metallic blend on the repaired areas. Quality inspections check the blend against the surrounding finish, and the programme is signed off against that scope. Delivered at Ocean Marina, Thailand.
On this Sunseeker Manhattan 73 at Ocean Marina, Thailand, paint repairs were completed first. The hull was then primed with Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer and finished in Awlcraft 3000 topcoats in Super Jet Black, with red style lines. Delivered December 2021.
Awlgrip 545 primer

On this Sunseeker Manhattan 73 at Ocean Marina, Thailand, paint repairs were completed first. The hull was then primed with Awlgrip 545 epoxy primer and finished in Awlcraft 3000 topcoats in Super Jet Black, with red style lines. Delivered December 2021.
Awlgrip

Awlgrip is the published finish on the explorer yacht in progress in Singapore, and on two programmes in Thailand. Where a card says Awlgrip and does not say Awlgrip 545, the note stays with the finish that card names. The topcoat is a polyester-based polyurethane chosen for high gloss, chemical resistance, hardness and a high distinctness of image. It is a low-maintenance finish: it is not waxed or polished as part of its upkeep.
On the 76.6 m explorer yacht, the published scope is a hull and superstructure refit in Singapore, with an Awlgrip finish. Fairing and the finish are scheduled with quality inspections and sign-off against the specification. Fairing is nearly complete, and the project is running ahead of schedule. Delivery is April 2027.
On the 42 m catamaran, the scope is fairing repairs and a full Awlgrip finish in Thailand. Fairing repairs are scheduled ahead of the finish. Quality inspections come before the finish goes on. Delivered. The result on the card is the fairing repairs and the full Awlgrip finish in Thailand.
On the 34 m Camper & Nicholsons, built in 1904, the scope is fairing and a full Awlgrip finish, applied by roller, brush and tip, at Bangkok Dock, Thailand. Fairing is inspected before the finish. Delivered. The published result is a faired hull and a full Awlgrip finish in Thailand.
Alexseal
Alexseal is the published coating on one delivered programme in Thailand and on the newbuilds in Haiphong. The grade in the specification guide is Alexseal Premium 501, set out for larger yachts. It is chosen for the way overspray is taken up, for repairability and for flow. A spot repair is blended with Blending Solvent.
On the 60 m Oceanco, planning for 2015 starts from a condition survey. The schedule was set from the written specification: fairing and an Alexseal refinish, and also brightwork, the pool, the underwater hull and the engine room. Those areas are scheduled as one programme, with quality inspections and sign-off against the specification. Delivered in 2015 at Bangkok Dock, Thailand.
On the three 33 m newbuilds, the published finish is Alexseal, with fairing, under climate-controlled tenting. Fairing and the finish are scheduled under that tenting. Hull 1 started on 24 June 2026 in Haiphong, Vietnam. The programme is in progress.
Hempel
Hempel is the published coating on one Thailand newbuild, on a subcontract in South Korea, and on a heritage racing craft. Where a specification calls for underwater coatings or for fairing specified for racing, Hempel is the system named for that use.
On the 34 m sailing yacht, the published coating is a Hempel system. ABS is the stated class notation. The system is scheduled and inspected against the specification, with sign-off that includes that ABS requirement. The newbuild was featured in Boat International in April 2012. Delivered.
On the 40 m aluminium motor yacht, the programme is a Hempel subcontract of about eight months on a 40 m aluminium newbuild in South Korea. Quality inspections and sign-off are against the Hempel specification. Delivered. The published result is that subcontract.
On the speed-record racing craft, the programme was managed as fairing in Hempel, specified for racing, and the weight of each product used was recorded. In the United Kingdom, the published result is 65.45 knots in November 2012, a world sailing speed record.
Sikaflex

Sikaflex is the published sealant for the interior and exterior renewal on the Princess Y78, 24.67 m, in Phuket in 2021. The sealant renewal, the gelcoat and veneer border repairs, and the teak steps are scheduled from the specification, inspected, and signed off as one programme. Completed in 2021.
Burmese riftsawn teak
Burmese riftsawn teak is the published timber for the renewed teak steps on the same Princess Y78 in Phuket in 2021. The steps are part of the programme that also includes the Sikaflex renewal and the gelcoat and veneer border repairs. Completed in 2021. The result includes the teak steps in Burmese riftsawn teak.
